"Every business has an owner that is trying to reach their dream. I thoroughly enjoy helping and witnessing people succeed."
Experience and Expertise
Derek is a partner at GALLINA LLP and leads the state and local tax (“SALT”) team with over twenty years of experience as a CPA and specializes in many industries including construction, high tech, service, and software. Derek also has a combination of federal income tax and payroll tax experience with large and small entities as well as individuals.
Beginning college as a computer science major, Derek changed his major after discovering he thoroughly enjoyed accounting. He still enjoys computers, especially when utilizing his passion for technology to create efficiencies in tax processes.
Derek has spent most of his career in public accounting, but also brings clients a unique perspective from eight years of experience in private industry tax departments within the states of Arizona and Utah. Having worked from the inside, he understands the internal needs of the financial and tax departments. When combining that with his perspective from public accounting, he has been able to see tax compliance and planning, multi-state income and sales tax, and many other viable functions of a business from all facets.
Derek wants to be a participant, not just a spectator. He feels like he has a front row seat watching people succeed in their business goals. Derek shares, “Every business has an owner that is trying to reach their dream. I thoroughly enjoy helping and witnessing people succeed.” This is what makes client interaction rewarding. Derek knows this is a people business and not just about saving taxes or creating a structure. He enjoys the positive feedback he receives after helping clients’ solve accounting or tax issues.
